Hi my name is Rusty from ohio and after watching your cover videos which are 2nd to none by the way. i have decided i wanted to learn to play the guitar. I was wondering if you had any pointers for someone just starting. Like where did you start in the beginning? did you take lessons? use books? or did it just come natural? the reason i am asking is i want to be able to play the thing in the shortest amount of time and since i know no one that plays i figured i might ask someone on the net before i begin.. i know you get this all the time but your very talented hope to see you in concert someday…ps your covers of Mazzy Star are my favs love that style of music and you perform them perfectly thx for any pointers and keep it up.
Congratulations Rusty, the holy spirit-muse has entered into you! We are blessed vessels. Hallelujah!
To answer your question, I took no lessons (though depending on the teacher and depending on you, I’m sure lessons can be helpful). My Mom had a guitar laying around that she rarely played. I was tired of pretending to be a drummer (drumsticks and the floor) but having no drums, and the guitar began calling to me. so I got myself a basic chord book and started teaching myself chords one by one. I practiced a LOT.
As the positive-learning-loop gained momentum (a little success = enough confidence & motivation to keep going = more successes = more confidence & desire to keep going = and so on)… I started trying to play songs I was listening to at the time, mostly by ear. The internet wasn’t too convenient to use back then (13-14 years ago), so that’s pretty much how it went from there. just literally playin’ it by ear. I just kept increasing the level of challenge, trying more and more difficult songs.
One thing I didn’t try to learn till way later and which I still suck at is scales. They’re tedious as hell to practice, but you should do it anyway. It’ll make you a better player (better than me!) and give you an intuitive feel for ’soloing’ and all that. I fancy myself a rhythm guitarist so I never was much interested in soloing (”wanking” as I like to call it), but there are times when it would be nice to have the option, and obviously there are plenty of examples of kick-ass solos.
But start with the basic chords.
Good luck and have fun! :)
haha “wanking”
i started playing about 2 years ago (on and off) when i was 15 and i use to hate arpeggios and stuff. i kept wanting to play around with chords. eventually my teacher made me practice them like crazy..my fingers barely recovered. guitar is like the easiest instrument to pickup in my opinion (even more easier to learn since we have the internet).
i love the cover, brooke. believe it or not i never heard of this band till i heard your cover.
PS.(keep at it with the drums if you can )
