I’ve been following your progress on this project for a few months and its really meant a lot to me because I’ve been making my own album over the same time. (I just shipped mine to be pressed this morning!) A lot of the things that you’ve said about wanting to be honest with your songs really hit home for me. I like “Wobbly Boat”. I think it really stays true to that honesty you talk about. Your voice sounds great and I love the acoustic sound. I’d like to hear more… maybe even share some of my songs with you. Its insane, how emotional the whole process can be sometimes but I’ve really felt connected to what you’re doing…. thanks

Hi Baby, I love your new song and I love your voice as well as your lyrics, it has really developed over the past year and it is uniquely your own, which is awesome! Keep up the good work, sweetie, it is paying off!

    Thanks everybodies!

Okay, I’ll post the lyrics down here. I thought it took away from the pure listening experience to have them right there in the post. They don’t read well without the feeling that the singing brings. But yeah, I’ll post the chords too so you can cover it if you want.

    Wobbly Boat
    (by the brooke)

    [D A G D (or sometimes D A G G) ]

I don’t want to go away
This is something very hard for me to say
You inspire in me something very strange
I feel like I’m being set up to lose you again

    [A D … A G D ]

‘Cause I’ve been a quiet girl
Most of my whole life, it’s true
And I’m trying to find my way out
But I don’t know how to

    [D A G D (or sometimes D A G G) ]

There is no end to the reaches
    Of what I don’t understand
So come on over here and hold my hand
And try to keep me from making too many plans

    [A D … A G D ]

And let us make our way
On this wobbly, weird, amazing boat of Life
For ourselves and for each other
And for a sliver of a chance
That we might catch a passing glance at God

    [D A G D (or sometimes D A G G) ]

    Just once I would like
to peek into that other world
Where we were together all along, all along
‘Cause you and I we have something
    Really really good

    [A D … A G D ]

So let us make our way
On this wobbly, weird, amazing boat of Life
For ourselves and for each other
And for a sliver of a chance
That we might catch a passing glance at God

    [ A G D D ]

Hi Jarod, i really like your new song, it’s very cool.

  11. Luce on February 20th, 2008

this is the first original i’ve heard from you. i love it ^^.by the way, you just went from awesome to rockstar

    cant wait to hear more

  12. Keith Handy on February 20th, 2008

Hooray! You did it! Now you can sit back and collect royalties. ;)

I was thinking of tossing an overdub on this and sending it back your way, not for any purpose other than for you to hear in the privacy of your own ears and go “ooh, overdub”… like a bass, or slide guitar, or electric piano or something. Maybe you can tell me what you’d like. Not bagpipes though.

And by the way, your guitar is tuned a full half-step down (unintentionally?), so we’re actually hearing it in C#. Best to say this now instead of waiting for people to flame each other about it in ten years on alt.music.the-brooke. ;)

  13. thebrooke on February 20th, 2008

    Thanks Ryan and Luce! :)

You guys are the wind beneath my wings.

Keith, I would love for you to play around with my song. Have at ‘er! I can’t wait to hear. :)

‘Wobbly Boat‘ (an original by me) …

  16. Melissa on February 25th, 2008

Thank you so much for posting this original song of yours. I have long been following your site and your music, intrigued by your style and voice. I feel drawn to this song, both for its musical and lyrical content. When you sing the part “there is no end to the reaches…” I feel like my heart is going to cave in…melodically, it is so lovely, and emotionally, so moving. I like how the song has a tight structure and coherence, yet you maintain enough vocal variation to keep it interesting. Another part I like: “…we have something really, really good..”..the way you sing that. How do you do that! I like the message of the song very much too…I feel like you words echo my heart. Pardon my sappiness. Thanks also for posting the chords…I managed to learn how to play and sing the first half of it or so:) If I could offer any critique it would be to perhaps vary your guitar strumming or rhythm a bit…although I like it, I think that as the song goes by, it starts sounding repetitive. I am not sure HOW precisely you could vary it, but I do think it would enhance the song further. Well there is my humble opinion. Please keep writing and sharing. Thank you!

  17. thebrooke on February 25th, 2008

Wow Melissa, awesome feedback! including the part about the guitar strumming. I know what you mean. I will play around with that in mind. This is by no means the definitive version, so I’m totally open to ideas and suggestions like that. In fact I really appreciate them, so thanks! :)

  22. krisgravity on March 18th, 2008

    hey brooke

wobbly boat is an amazing song. it captures a very special mood somewhere between joy, sadness, melancholy, joie de vivre, and then some. i really enjoy listening too your voice and guitar. kinda has a nick drake atmosphere but not as ‘depressing’ if that’s a correct word to describe his music. anyway, ur very believable as an artist and wobbly boat really hit the spot!

… here i go ramblin’ on again, … how presumptious of me …

    toodles

  23. krisgravity on March 18th, 2008

ooh yeah, about that comment: i wasn’t paying attention to the lyrics when i first listened so i completely neglected any and all semantical issues save the title …

words that stand out without listening to the the lyrics as a whole:
come on over here and hold my hand
    And try to keep me

So let us make our way
On this wobbly, weird, amazing boat

And for a sliver of a chance
That we might catch a passing glance

    lovely music

  24. thebrooke on March 18th, 2008

Thanks David, and thanks Kris. I’m glad you don’t think my music is depressing. although I don’t find Nick’s depressing either, but I think I know what you mean. :)
