Lyrics & Chords for ‘Party Sciences’
by the brooke (a tiny ocean).

    [Am Am G Am]

    Maybe you have not been
    Studying your party sciences
Oh no, I feel your piercing eyes
    Analyzing, but not understanding

    Building defensive fences
Is not my intention and has never been
All I know is that you only see
    What you expect to see

    [D-but-on-5th-fret, D-but-on-7th-fret, Am G Am G]

    All I wanted
Was to joke about good and evil with you
I am in it for the fun
Even more than the battles that you live for

    [Am C D - instrumental]

    [Am C D]

It’s really not you that I’m talking about
It’s just some stubborn part of me
But there are others in the distance
Who come to tell us about our innocence

    [D-but-on-5th-fret, D-but-on-7th-fret, Am G Em]

And help us rise above the draggers-down below us
And sing us songs of who we were
    In times before
    Before we were born

[Am C D - some kind of bridge with organ melody]

    [Am C D]

I’m getting so tired of self righteous people
    There are no Karma Police
    There is no Judgement Day
Only the day when you release forever
    Release forever

    [D-but-on-5th-fret, D-but-on-7th-fret, Am G]

    All of your so-called sins
    And judgments about yourself
    Mountains of misunderstandings
    Scattered with broken glass
    The houses of the past
    Leave them behind
I’ll meet you on the other side

    [Am C D - instrumental]

    [Am G]

    Forgive me for my part
    In this ridiculous war
    Over nothing
    Over nothing

It’s just a game, but at the same time
We are more than just pawns
    In each other’s lives
    In each other’s lives

    [D-but-on-5th-fret, D-but-on-7th-fret, Am G]

    [Am C D - instrumental - end on Am]

If anyone can tell me what those “D-but-on-5th/7th-fret” chords actually are called, that would be much appreciated! :)

  3. Iran on February 24th, 2008

I took the time to listen to your concert: I wouldn’t have missed it for the world and the tickets where reasonably priced. And I was trying to play it as you do; I have to say you make it easy to read. It is an amazing song and you have such a soothing voice. Check your e mail for comments on the song. It was amazing to listen to you I can’t wait for the encore! I looked up the chords and it seems it is called D7/Ddim and Dmaj7b5 or D7-9/D13 I don’t think that there is an actual chord for those it is a mixture of chords but ill keep my eye out hope that helps. You’re an amazing singer, and a wonderful guitarist.

  4. Markus on February 24th, 2008

    Brilliant …. (:

  7. Jarod on February 24th, 2008

Whoa, Great idea! I listened to the whole thing with my morning coffee and I’m feeling pretty inspired to play now. My favourites were party sciences (its still in my head) and the across the universe cover although I wish you had kept going with Angeles cause thats a fantastic song too. This bedroom concert idea could really catch on. I kind of want to try one. I love that you didn’t take anything out and just left all of your “ahhh shit’s” when you messed up! So much better that way…. its such a real thing that people do so well when they are alone. Please do another concert!

  8. Luce on February 25th, 2008

wow..my first brooke concert..and i didnt even have to leave my house! i love nearly all of those songs especially with you singing them. if only it were possible to get backstage so you could sign my forehead..my friends would be so jealous..

    \m/

  9. crowindustries on February 25th, 2008

this is superfine…i`m loving it while i work. cheers!

  10. thebrooke on February 25th, 2008

    Thanks guys. :)

@Iran - hey, thanks for checking into those chords! I haven’t received any email from you recently, though, so you might want to send again, or just comment here since it’s about the song. :)

@Jarod - Glad it inspired you to play! That is the ultimate goal after all - to spread the joy. So Party Sciences got stuck in your head? Haha. Awesome. I guess that’s one upside to doing it 4 times in one ‘concert’! Though for those who catch this after tonight, I’ve decided to shorten the concert down a bit by cutting out the 1st 2 takes, since I listened some more and decided I don’t like them as much as the last 2. It is slight overkill to have it 4x.

Aside from that though, I’m glad you share my sentiment about leaving in mistakes and mis-takes. I came of age to lo-fi-ers like Rick White, and I always relished in the so-called ‘flaws’ in those recordings. So personal and real and intimate. That was everything to me. Of course, it has to be combined with some awesome musical sensibility, but I think when that is there, the two elements become a magical combination.

  11. thebrooke on February 25th, 2008

@Lucifer: would you really let me sign your forehead? Heheee.. I would have some fun with that. I don’t know if ‘jealous’ is what your friends would be.. but they’d be something.

If you send me a picture of your face, I’ll sign your pretend-forehead. :)

  12. thebrooke on February 25th, 2008

    Thanks crowindustries!
Is that your given name? :)

  13. Big Elk - Bedroom Concert - 2008-02-24 (Leaky Basement) - [tmbchr]™ on February 25th, 2008

Idea stolen sort of loosely from “The Brooke”: my latest foray into singin & pickin and me simply trying to “find my voice” - as they say. Suffice it to say, that I am still looking. This was also sort of a mental dry-run to prep myself for an open mic situation, although who knows if I will yammer as much in real life when I finally get up there and do it to it. …

  14. Steve McGrath on February 26th, 2008

I’m loving the bedroom concert Brooke, great idea and some real gems in there, you have some real talent.

  15. thebrooke on February 26th, 2008

    Thanks Steve :)

  16. thebrooke on February 26th, 2008

Downloading should work now. Something was screwy with it before.

  17. Markus on February 26th, 2008

Actually I don’t think it’s the mistakes that are alluring Brooke, it’s just that your recordings itself are uninterrupted and fluid and gives one an overall feeling of truthfulness from you yourself that makes this so real and becoming. There is nothing so true than that which is true …

  18. thebrooke »  Highlights from Bedroom Concert the 1st (MP3s) on February 28th, 2008

here are some highlights (songs I actually play from start to finish. more or less) from my recent Bedroom Concert, MP3-ified as individual …

  19. sarahsaurousrex on March 5th, 2008

i want to be your friend.

  20. thebrooke on March 6th, 2008

Thanks Sarah. Stick around and hang out! We’re all friends here.

Only sucky thing is you can’t braid each other’s hair over the internet. Seriously. I miss that.

I also kinda miss my hair.

  21. Chris on March 6th, 2008

hey I wasnt too sure on how to contact u on this site so im using this part =D

you’re music is brilliant, i used u (among many a many others) at my university as an example of soul in music… YOU ROCK!!!

I learned how to play Dancing in the Moonlight of you (before that i was playing it with a stray cat and black and white salmon… (im that bad)

thankyou so much for you brilliant covers and wiked site =)

    keep rockin’!

  22. Dave on March 6th, 2008

Nice concert! I just started learning how to play guitar this Christmas at age 54. Had cancer a few years ago and got me thinking about things that I wanted to but never did. One was making my own beer which I now do and learn how to play guitar which I am now doing. Love your versions of the Beatles and Neil Young stuff. Also like Little Red Ridin’ Hood which I am now starting to play myself! From what I can figured you seem to be still in your teens and if that is true what a wonderful job you do with everything that you do!Also how about posting some pictures of yourself. All your videos and pictures posted have a mysterious look to them. LOL! Anyway just wanted to write and say keep up the great work and you a great singer. Your voice fits your style of songs perfectly.

  23. Rudolf Schmidt on March 6th, 2008

Bravo!!! Next is bathroom concert, i presume ( for the acoustic,of course). When you get to the kitchen you’ll be a pro. Very, very promising. Keep them coming.

  24. thebrooke on March 6th, 2008

Dave, You kicked cancer? Good on you! And good on you for doing the things you always wanted to do. It’s never too late, long as you’re still kickin.

By the way, I’m not in my teens (not even close, anymore) so don’t be TOO impressed. But do be impressed. ;)

Thanks to all you guys for the encouraging words.

  25. Dave on March 7th, 2008

I had prostate cancer but it was caught early. The doctor said one more year and it would have too late. I still have a 2 year watching period but they don’t expect the cancer to return. So if you know any old guys like me encourage them to get tested yearly.I forgot to mention, along with other people that have mentioned this, I think you could do a great job doing the Beatles “Norweign Wood” or “Girl” for that matter. Even though you are not in your teens like I thought, I am still impressed with all the things you do! LOL

  26. guida on March 7th, 2008

With an attitude like that no one can be called
    “old”,dave.
But thanks for having no fake pudency, it´s refreshing. It shows a maturity that in many contexts, guys don´t have.
    Way to go!

  27. Dave on March 7th, 2008

Thanks Guida! Even though I still feel my age sometimes I still remain active playing basketball, hiking, walking, and biking whenever possible. Leaving in Oregon gives me plenty of opportunities to stay in shape with outdoor activities. Life is for living!

  28. Dave on March 7th, 2008

Oops! I meant living in Oregon not leaving!

  29. sarahsaurousrex on March 7th, 2008

Man I totally know what you mean about the hair. I basically took some garden sheers to mine and hacked off 13 inches. Coincidentally a big gust of wind tried to blow me away the same day and I was like 10 pounds lighter. But the good thing is I donated it to cancer. So someone has some new and improved goldy locks. only…brown.

  30. thebrooke on March 7th, 2008

aw damnit! why didn’t I think to donate my hair to cancer? I feel like a big jerk.

  31. sarahsaurousrex on March 7th, 2008

No worries. I did it twice so there was enough for both of us.. and probably someone else too.

  32. Justin on March 9th, 2008

    Hey Brooke,

    Hope you are good.
Just listened and downloaded your Bedroom Concert, it totally rocks, you have an amazing voice and a great talent. Love the style which you recored it all in. You should be selling it in the shops!!
I’m still plugging away myself, looked up some of those video links you recomended and they really helped.

    Take care of yourself.

    Justin

  33. thebrooke on March 12th, 2008

    Why thank you, Justin.

Selling it in the shops you say? wait a minute… are you a british person? that phrasing sounds suspiciously british. If so, give yourself a big hug from me. that’s what you get for saying things in such delightful ways.

PS: is it really true that only british people can fly?

  34. Justin on March 13th, 2008

Very amusing video! We don’t get that show at home.

Still don’t know how you worked out where I’m from by how I say things, we really aren’t all cups of tea and politeness you know!!
I’m kind of British, I am actually from Northern Ireland, and, as it happens I can fly - sort of - I am currently in New Zealand training to be a pilot.

  35. thebrooke on March 13th, 2008

that’s kind of weirdly almost prophetic of me.

I don’t know what it is, I’m just in love with english accents and slang. I have an alter ego (a hypnotist) who is english, but she’s not very convincing yet. her accent still needs quite a bit of work. my russian alter ego, even more so. a southern girl has started emerging as well. I don’t know if I’ll develop her or not.

other than the english hypnotist, I don’t have any particular reason for developing alter egos except that I get bored having just one.

New Zealand! We’ve been thinking about take a trip there later this year.
Well, happy flying! what a cool profession.

  36. Justin on March 14th, 2008

everyone needs an alter ego!! make sure if you come to New Zealand to look me up (is that American slang?? or should it be write me?) anyway, I am here until at least September. I’ll keep an eye on your website though.

Top tip……. a Russian alter ego would be much cooler than an English one!!

  37. thebrooke on March 14th, 2008

I will totally look you up if we get out there. although now South America is calling to us…

and yes, the russian accent and alter ego would be the coolest of all.

hey, does anyone know of anything, say, intended for actors to develop good convincing accents, like a set of tapes/cds or something? I’d be interested in that. You think I’m just messing around but I’m quite serious.

  38. Iran on March 14th, 2008

    Brooke,
I have to say that is an different request to post but in the spirit of thinking outside the box I took a look at some sites but had no luck, But if acting is your calling i found this check it out.
    There is http://www.expertvillage.com/video/18667_auditioning-oncamera-accents.htm?ref=yssp
As far as accents are concerned you should hear mine… lol it is something that you loose and you gain as you learn to read and speak another language. And I had to ask what is your interest in South America?, I had a chance to go to Colombia and it was amazing. Ill, tell you about my long trip latter but it is a beautiful enchanting place. o and what did you mean us do you have a band of actors in need of some traveling?

  39. sarahsaurousrex on March 16th, 2008

heyo! i started learning little red riding hood on account of i’ll be doing a show soon. your video definately helped so thanks! what have you been up to lately?

  40. stuart on March 17th, 2008

Just wanted to say that i think your voice is amazing, your cover of into dust is very moving and beautiful.

  41. thebrooke on March 18th, 2008

@Iran - I am no actor. I mean other than on the stage that is life. But that’s plenty reason enough to learn accents n shit. :) it’s just fun.

South America? I definitely have to go to, to see the pyramids! Plus it’s super cheap there. ;)

  42. thebrooke on March 18th, 2008

@sarah - cool, glad it helped! that song needs to be played more.

    @stuart - thanks :) you’re too kind…

  43. Iran on March 19th, 2008

    Brooke,
I would definitely recommend that you travel it has changed my life for sure, I took a 33 day trip threw all the central American countries by bus, and it was amazing the things I saw the people i met and the things I did, even have a few pictures of me on the pyramids and volcano’s among other things the world can be your play ground and it is not that expensive at all for what you see and get out of it. If you ever go to Central America stop on my at my country Nicaragua and it will meet all your expectations.

    take care chica

  44. thebrooke on March 19th, 2008

I’ll definitely try to stop by if/when I get down that way. :)

  45. JohnMcS on March 21st, 2008

    Brooke,

I used to be in the record industry in the 70″s and I believe with the right back-up band and the correct material, with your voice you could have a huge career ahead.
    Good Luck

I stumbled onto you by accident I’ll admit but since i saw your cover for karma police on youtube i’ve been listening to you all day at work. You’ve heard it before but your voice has serious calming power. I just started to play the guitar and hearing you play gets me pumped to go home and try to jam. keep it going.

    Thank ya kindly April :)

  59. Chris on June 4th, 2008

    Brooke,

Seriously, as everyone has said, you’ve got an unbelievable amount of talent. Your voice is incredible and captures one at first note…and then, enter guitar. You need to drop an album - did I mention soon? Perhaps, ummm, say, now? I feel like a crack addict who got his first one for free (bedroom concert) and NEEDS MORE! No, I’ve never actually gotten lifted on crack but I imagine this is as close as it comes.

I happened upon you while looking for “All that i need” on youtube. You did the best job that i’ve seen anyone do with that song, outside of Shannon himself. I can’t seem to find chords for that one and I’m not blessed enough to figure it out by ear. I’ve watched your video more than I care to admit and can’t quite discern some of the chords. Any good idea(s) on where I could score the chords?

Keep on keepin on. You’ll go as far as you choose. I look forward to hearing more from you - even if you just sang an encyclopedia, page by page, I’d listen and enjoy it.

    Take care,
    Chris

  60. Chris on June 4th, 2008

Alright, seek and ye shall find… I’ve been floating through this treasure trove of goodness, (also known as Brooke’s Super Sweet Site of Masterful Magical Ninja Goodness - ok, so perhaps it’s not ‘known’ as that, and maybe I’ve gotten carried away but it could catch on, right? I didn’t think so either… what if I find a way to add ‘unicorn’ in there… or even candy corn??)

Huuhmmm. What I meant is that I found the spot that directs the blind (me) to the Blind Melon “All that I need” goods. You were waaaaay ahead of me on that one.

P.S. can I buy a blog elf from you? They sound like fun! Do they like to play frisbee? If so, may I have two?

    -Chris

  61. skieseye on June 5th, 2008

hey brooke today i recorded a song i made… well which i made song, because the lyrics are a robert frost’s poem, but i put the music… it’s still just an idea, nothing super good or very original, but i felt like doing it anyway, and well, it talks about a brook… if you want to hear it mail me or somethingso i send you the mp3…

  62. thebrooke on June 5th, 2008

good on ya skieseye! definitely email me the mp3. My email address is:
    thebrooke13 (at) gmail (dot com).

  63. thebrooke on June 5th, 2008

Chris, you flatter me. And you put ideas in my head that shouldn’t be put there, like “what if I DID just sing a whole encyclopedia?…..”

Thanks and I’m glad you found the blind melon post. I was gonna point you to it if you didn’t.

An album will happen, I promise. Even the remote likelihood of a spring/summer release went out the window months ago, but it’s only a delay!

Thanks for your support! all of you who keep sticking with me on faith, I love you!

Blessings and deliciousness to you all.

today i made some musical discoveries… and it made my day, and probably i’ll listen to nothing but this… that is…

    -john fahey
-six organs of admittance (ben chasney, practically)

if you don’t know them, check ‘em out!

im on the lookout for new sounds… new or old bands, artists, but interesting things i’ve probably never heard before… suggestions? (the ones i mention are not specially unheard-of sounds, but are worth listening to)

  66. thebrooke on June 12th, 2008

Benj! Hi, and thanks. It means a lot and the feelin’s mutual.

  67. thebrooke on June 12th, 2008

hey skieseye, thanks for the recommends. I’ll check those dudes out.

I don’t know where to start recommending bands/artists… I’d say the best thing would be to check out my last.fm station to see what I’ve been listening to, and then you can easily link to those bands’ stations and check them out there.

Actually, here’s one artist I’m really into that few people seem to know about — Chris Garneau — beautiful, emotional, kind of childlike, just piano and vocals and little else. really worth checking out.

  68. thebrooke on June 12th, 2008

skieseye, I checked both those artists out on last.fm. both kickass! found some of their mp3s here too and downloaded ‘em. thanks again!

  69. Hank on June 12th, 2008

    Brooke,

I found your music surfing youtube, looking for a primer on how to play Stray Cat Strut. You’ve got an incredible voice, as I’m sure you know by now. Very impressed by your guitar playing, too. I’ve only been playing about six months, but I know enough to appreciate how well you play. I’ve learned at least one other song already from you, too, Little Red Riding Hood, so thanks for that.

Since people were recommending music, here’s the best band nobody’s ever heard of, IMO. http://www.ezrathomas.com/ I discovered them by accident. You can download their albums for free from their site. At the very least, check out “Stereo” from their first album (though that’s not the only good one on it). You can hear it for free here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/ezrathomas. The song that plays when you go to their website is “Galveston” from their second album.

    Thanks for the music.

    Hank

    Thanks Hank and Dave :)

Hank, I’ll check out those bands (when I get some time!).. I do like bands who give out free albums.
