props!

Sup! Before I fly to Ann Arbor for the weekend, I’d just like to extend props to a couple internet friends, specifically whose names start with ‘T’.

Ted Heistman of the blog Free Range Organic Human said some rather nice things about me recently after he finally checked out my Youtube videos. Hey, it’s never too late. Thanks Ted!

Tim Boucher, aka Big Elk, just released what he calls an IP (Internet Package) of all-new, nice clean demos of all his songs. His lyrics kick ass and his style is kinda old-timey mountain folk music meets the guy from the Moldy Peaches. I have it going in the background and I’m digging so far! It’s free to download so check it out (go for the ZIP, it includes lyrics and other goodies). Here’s my favorite track. It’s also in the public domain so if you like any of it, take it and do stuff with it (the songs are super coverable), or as he put it: “$$$ GET RICH OFF ME, PLEASE!!! $$$”.

And lastly but not leastly in the giving of props, much gratitude to everyone who commented or emailed to express concern over my health after my weird near-death episode last weekend. Just to alleviate any worries though, I’m fine! I feel great! And life is good. I gotta go pack now, bye! Love y’all!

Mini Update and Hello!

Hello!

Well, things are better. The darkest hour, just before the dawn, and all that. At least I’m getting back into the swing of things and feeling the wherewithall to make songs and be semi-productive again. Hooray for human resilience! Here’s a couple of things I was doing in my less ambitious state, to tide you over till my next, better wave of postings:

I uploaded my Youtube covers and my 1st Bedroom Concert — (Update: and now, The Wayward Covers of 2007 as well) — to my new Last.fm page, where you can stream them all and/or download them all for freeeeee…

My site now has a snazzy logo, as you may have noticed. I’m going to post that JPEG somewhere handy so anyone who wants to can download it and mess with it (color it, doodle on it, collage around it, otherwise flesh it out in creative ways however you please) and send it back to me. If I dig it, I’ll totally add it into my rotating header-image folder and it will show up randomly as my header sometimes! (also, maybe stickers!). I’m a fan of randomness, collaboration and variations on themes, so I would get a huge kick out of this. It’s also a visual version of one of the things I want to do with my songs

Speaking of which, check out what my friend Keith did with my Wobbly Boat demo. He made it all sweet and countrified in a really good way. [Download it and listen to it!]

Other than that, if you’re hankering for more frequent updates, check out my Scrapbook. It’s always a good time. That Carole King song is as perfect as they get.

“21 Love Songs” Magnetic Fields Tribute Released!

21 Love Songs: A Tribute to the Magnetic Fields
21 Love Songs: A Tribute to the Magnetic Fields is at last unleashed upon the world.

To refresh your poor, ADD-inflicted 21st century memories, I made a song for it last month, and designed one of the two album covers (as seen above). My cover of “Born on a Train” is track #13 (my lucky number)! Did James do that on purpose? I don’t even know!

Speaking of the devil, once again, mad props must go to James Eric for dreaming up this idea and making it all happen, and also to the many great artists who grace this great album.

It really is great. I love these people!

Go and download the album for free at the wonderful, magical, fantasmical CLLCT!

Highlights from Bedroom Concert the 1st (MP3s)

Bedroom Concert the 1st :: by the brooke (a tiny ocean).

Howdy folks.

As per a few people’s requests, I singled out some songs from Bedroom Concert the 1st (the ones I actually more or less finished all the way through) as individual tracks:

  • Wobbly Boat (original by me) — lyrics here.
  • Behind the Garage (Eric’s Trip cover)
  • Bang Bang (Nancy Sinatra cover)
  • I Love You, Always (Brian Jonestown Massacre cover)
  • If I Love You (Brian Jonestown Massacre cover)
  • Dear Prudence (Beatles cover)
  • Across the Universe (Beatles cover)

I also added album art & stuff to the metadata (I just figured out how to edit metadata! and that it’s kind of important to do that. So I did). Here’s all those ‘highlight’ tracks, plus the full concert, all .zipped up for your convenience: [ZIPPITY doo].

In other news…

Aside from my weird acoustic songs, I’ve been happily busy with another band I’m in (as the drummer), in which we rock out! It is fronted by awesome dude #1: Jon, and complimented by awesome bass player dude #2: Trevor. Here’s the thing, though. We’ve yet to choose a name. Here are bunch of possibles I’ve been spit-balling in my notebook over the last while, or that I’ve loosely ripped off from places:

  • Del Monte Fashion Peas*
  • End Times Puppet Show*
  • Time-traveling Jon and the Strangetalkers from Nowhere
  • The Party Scientists*
  • The Whistling Kidnappers*
  • The Flirting Hermits
  • On Watch For Martians
  • Naked Poets
  • The Storywhistlers
  • The Boxcar Beekeepers*
  • The Unanswered Questions
  • The One True Truth!
  • Animate Objects
  • Snow Angels (of ____)
  • etc. (I could do this all day).

And hey, whatever we don’t pick, feel free to steal! (But until then, BACK OFF. Get your own band name).

Soon I’ll probably post some clips from our jam/practice sessions. I just want to make sure it’s okay with the band mates first.

Meanwhile, I’m on the verge of finishing some more new songs, and have been cooking up some crazy ideas with pals of mine, like open-source albums, premonitory EPs and more! Tune in soon and tune in often.
